She had taken her first few sips when there was a knock at the door. She yelled to Andrews not to bother, she would get it. Smiling she opened the door to find an incredibly striking woman standing there. She was a few years older than Kathryn, fiery ginger hair which hung below her shoulders in loose curls, and the most amazing, yet troubled, blue eyes.
âMay I help you?â Kathryn asked politely.
âI was told Graydon was here. Is he in? I need to see him,â she inquired hopefully in her lilting Scottish brogue. Noting the smile start to fade from Kathrynâs face she rushed on, âI am his sister-in-law Suzanne, Aaronâs wife.â
Kathrynâs eyes flew open wide, âOh, oh my, but you are supposed to be in Edinburgh at your sisterâs. Does Aaron know youâre back? Oh, where are my manners? My name is Kathryn, come in, come in.â Kathryn let the door swing open allowing Suzanne admittance.
Suzanne smiled at the frazzled woman. She had learned from Hugh that Kathryn had essentially saved Graydonâs life. That alone earned her Suzanneâs friendship and trust, and the fact Hugh thought Graydon was quite taken with the beautiful woman did not hurt either. Boldly Suzanne took Kathrynâs hands in hers and answered her questions, âDo you honestly believe I would have hid myself in Edinburgh whilst my daughter was missing? And no, Aaron does not know I am back. If he did, he would be roaring mad. That is why I came looking for Graydon. He will be able to ease Aaron into accepting my early return. How could I go to my sisterâs not knowing what is happening, not knowing if I would ever seeâ¦â her voice caught on the thought, and she could not go on.
Kathryn squeezed her hands to give her some comfort. âAnnaâs very much alive, and they have found where she is being kept.â
Suzanneâs face brightened, and then clouded over again. Shaking her head she said, âNot at the house in the country, by the time they got there, she was gone.â
Now it was Kathrynâs turn to shake her head, âNo, this just developed early this morning. Graydon, my son Robert, and another boy Matthew are heading to Aaronâs as we speak to tell him Anna was found.â
âIf they found her why in blazes did not they get her?â
âMy reaction precisely. My son was alone last night when he followed a rather unsavory fellow to where she was being kept. There were several other men in the house, so Robert came back for reinforcements.â
âOh, so they will be rescuing her shortly.â Suzanneâs brow rose when Kathryn started shaking her head again.
âThe kidnappers are planning to move her at sundown tomorrow. I think our men plan to wait until then so they can get the ones responsible for the kidnapping as well as rescuing Anna.â
âThe bloody hell they are,â she roared dropping Kathrynâs hands, âover my dead body will they use my baby as bait!â Suzanne was now pacing the vestibule, the color rising in her face.
